One of my favorite things is cooking with fresh herbs and veggies from the garden. I have been planting my own for years. There is something magical about picking your own food from your yard and using it to create something for your family. The kids have loved to be a part of it too.
One of my most special memories when our big boys were younger was making spaghetti with them from scratch. We picked the tomatoes and herbs from the garden and used them to make my grandmother’s special sauce. We even made pasta from scratch! It was so simple but a great way to spend time together. I will never forget it.
This year, we decided attempt to grow our garden from seeds. The boys planted them all and have been watering them and watching them grow. We are using it as a learning opportunity for them too. Luke is going to use it to earn his Grow Something Scout loop and Austin is cataloging our progress and learning about the scientific method. He even has a hypothesis! He has noticed that some plants are growing faster than others and predicts it is because they were from larger seeds.
I am looking for all sorts of ways to display our hard work when the time comes to transplant them and the possibilities are endless. I am focusing not only on what I like to use when cooking but ideas for repelling flies and mosquitos as well as beautiful blooms! I’m particularly excited about my Moonflower Vine. I had one years ago in Birmingham and it is absolutely lovely. Here is what we will (hopefully) have to enjoy over the next few months- tomatoes, asparagus beans, okra, zucchini, lima beans, sweet bell peppers, squash, corn and watermelon (the boys really wanted this but I don’t think it will work with our limited space), cucumbers, chives, rosemary, mint, parsley, basil, thyme, oregano, lavender, morning glories, marigolds, daisies and moonflowers.
